It’s hard to believe Patrick Cantlay’s only won twice on the PGA Tour. The ultra-talented Long Beach, California has a great chance to change that this week in his home state.

He’s making his second trip to the Safeway Open after recording a T-17 (69-68-73-70) in 2018.

The former All-American and top-ranked amateur at UCLA won this year at an elevated status event, the Memorial Tournament. He qualified for his first American team and will tee it up in December for the Presidents Cup in Australia.

Also helping him get to Melbourne is his consistency. He missed just two cuts in 2019. He was a runner up at the BMW Championship and had two third-place finishes including at the PGA Championship.

Cantlay also contended down to the end at the Masters (T-9) and made the weekend at the US Open (T-21) and Open Championship (T-41).

The 27-year-old finished second on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.857) only behind a remarkable year by Rory McIlroy (2.551). Cantlay was 18th off the tee (.475), 10th in approach (.64), sixth around the green (.356) and 26th in putting (.386). He was second in scoring average (69.306).

The one way Cantlay can slip up is by missing fairways. He was 160th in driving accuracy (57.34%) and subsequently 165th in proximity from the rough (47’6”). From the fairway, he’s fourth in proximity (28’11”). He can bash his way around Silverado if he wants to, but dialing it back will still yield him enough birdie attempts.
