Safeway Open: Top 10 power rankings for Silverado CC
Bryson DeChambeau is among several Presidents Cup team members in the field keeping their clubs from gathering dust in the buildup to Royal Melbourne in December.
This will be the third trip to the Safeway Open for the mad scientist. His first trip as a 23-year-old rookie resulted in a missed cut (70-74). The collegiate national champion and All-American at SMU struggled early on as a pro but has since established himself as one of the world’s best.
He’s won five times on the PGA Tour (and once on the European Tour) since 2017 and qualified for the 2018 Ryder Cup Team.
While his T-17 (73-69-67-72) at the 2017 Safeway Open will not be at the top of his career highlights, it bodes well for his chances this week. He hit 73.61% GIR that week and averaged 304.9 yards off the tee. A poor putting week (-.239) kept him from the top 10.
His putting was strong last season (28th SG, .372) and complemented proficiency tee to green (37th, .641). DeChambeau was 12th in par-5 scoring (4.52) and 16th in par breakers (23.69%).
His 2019 calendar year was highlighted by a win at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour and a T-2 at the 3M Open where he was one shot out of a playoff. DeChambeau had seven top-10s.
He missed the cut in his last event, A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier.
