Matsuyama didn’t get a ton of air time last season because he was hardly in the mix late on a Sunday. However, he was still a great option for fantasy golfers out there due to his consistency.

The six-time PGA Tour winner has been shut out since 2017 but has nine top-10s in the last two calendar years. Japan’s top golfer recorded 14 top-25s in the 2018-19 Tour season including third at a pair of strong events in the Farmers Insurance Open and BMW Championship.

He missed just two cuts and had a streak of 19 cuts made worldwide from 2018 to 2019.

His 2018-19 Tour stats were a microcosm of his career as an elite ball-striker and poor putter. He was third in SG tee to green (1.487) but 97th in putting (.011). Granted, it was his second year inside the top 100 putting after finishing 102nd and 167th in the seasons prior, but it wasn’t quite the improvement he was hoping for.

Nonetheless, he posted the highest in his career around the green (.347) for his second time in the top 20.

Matsuyama is coming to the Safeway Open for the fourth time and for the third time at the current venue. He finished T-3 in 2013 at Corde Valle and did the same in 2014 at Silverado (70-67-69-70). Matsuyama also took T-17 in 2015 (70-70-69-69).
