Collin Morikawa came up short of winning 2018-19 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors to Sungaje Im, but pound for pound, Morikawa was the best newcomer given the few starts he made.

After an All-American collegiate career at Cal-Berkeley, the 22-year-old came out and won the Barracuda Championship in just his sixth start as a pro. He was also T-2 at the 3M Open, losing to fellow rookie Matthew Wolff.

Morikawa has made the cut in all 10 starts on the PGA Tour in 2019, including T-4 at the John Deere Classic and T-10 last week at the Safeway Open (72-64-70-71). The 64 came in the marquee grouping of Phil Mickelson and Patrick Cantay, further exemplifying poise beyond his years.

Morikawa’s 32 measured rounds by ShotLink last season weren’t enough for PGA Tour rankings, but if they were, his strokes gained approach (.887) would’ve been near the top. He’s not the longest guy out there (296.5 yards) but is crazy accurate off the tee (72.1%) and will be suited just fine at a course.

This is Morikawa’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open debut, though Las Vegas is now a home game. He moved to Sin City this summer and is from southern California, so he’s no stranger to desert golf.
