Shriners Hospitals for Children Open: Top 10 power rankings
Your defending tournament champion is making his fourth start at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. The 26-year-old fired rounds of 66-66-65-66 to win by one over 2017 winner Patrick Cantlay, who he was tied with entering Sunday. An eagle on the par-5 16th was integral to what was his third win in five events.
DeChambeau also tied for 36th in his tournament debut in 2016 and tied for seventh in 2017. Suffice it to say that he feels comfortable around these parts.
"“I love it. It’s dry air. It’s kind of what I grew up. Fresno, California is not really humid. Kind of the same vibe and feel and conditions. There is a little elevation; that’s just a change,” DeChambeau said in 2018. “But I love this time of environment. Heat is always good for me.”"
With how strong he closed out 2018, it’s hard to believe he didn’t win at all the rest of the 2018-19 PGA Tour season (though he did win early in 2019 on the European Tour).
Albeit winless, he came within a stroke of winning the 3M Open (T-2) and only missed five cuts last season.
He’s coming off three top-25s in his last five starts including a T-13 last week at the Safeway Open. Had it not been for a Saturday 76, the SMU product would’ve been in contention with rounds of 68, 64 and 70.
DeChambeau was 18th on Tour last season in total strokes gained (1.013) thanks largely to his work tee to green (.641 SG, 37th) and putting (.372 SG, 28th).
