Cole Hammer is America’s top amateur and is a top talent that will be cashing checks before long.

He wrapped up the McCormack Medal in August for being No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Hammer, 19, has some impressive credentials.

He qualified for the 2015 U.S. Open as a 15-year-old (!), was an AJGA All-American, a 2018 U.S. Amateur semifinalist, 2018 Western Amateur Champion, a two-time winner at the University of Texas (top-25 in all six events), and a 2019 Walker Cup member. And that’s just the cliff notes.

His surname is befitting of his game. The kid can crush the ball. He’ll look to bomb and gouge it around Golf Club of Houston while trying to avoid trouble in his first look at this course in competition.

The Houston native will have plenty of support in his hometown. He tweeted that “It’s always been a dream of mine to play in my hometown PGA TOUR event.”

Hammer is leaving his Longhorns who will be competing about 40 miles northwest in Hockley, Texas at the Big 12 Match Play. I think his teammates will understand his absence. Who knows? Maybe they’ll even be there on Sunday to watch him do the unthinkable.
