Several players did enough at the Portugal Masters this week to get inside the top 117 on the Race to Dubai list to retain their status as a European Tour player for 2020.

This was the final event where cards could be retained or lost, with only the top 117 on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai leaderboard remaining on the Tour for next season.

The likes of England’s Steven Brown, the victor in Portugal, and the two men who finished behind him, in South Africa’s Justin Walters and Brandon Stone, all catapulted themselves into the top 100.

Brown moved up 81 spaces, finishing the week in 69th place, while Walters and Stone moved up 42 and 51 places, respectively, and are now in 79th and 97th on the Race to Dubai list.

Korea’s Jeunghun Wang was another who moved up from below the cut-off point. After a T6 finish in Vilamoura, the Korean moved into 101st and booked his spot on next year’s Tour.

England’s Jack Singh Brar and Chilean Hugo Leon both needed good weeks to retain their cards. The Englishman came into the week as the all-important 117th man on the Race to Dubai list, eventually finishing in 109th after this putt on the last at Dom Pedro Victoria.

Leon, on the other hand, only just managed to keep his card for 2020. The Chilean ended the week in 116th, after moving up four spots thanks to a T21 finish in Portugal.

For Australian Min Woo Lee, it was a much tighter affair, as he could only manage a T63 finish for his week’s work. The Aussie would be the one to end the week in 117th place, as he dropped seven spots, but held on by just 0.7 of a point.

It was Sweden’s Niklas Lemke that was the unfortunate man to miss out at the very end. He sits 118th on the Race to Dubai leaderboard after finishing outside the top 50 in Portugal. The Swede dropped seven spots, and more importantly, below the cut-off line.

The likes of Frenchman Clement Sordet and England’s Lee Slattery also suffered the same fate, as neither were able to make the cut in Portugal, condemning themselves to lose their cards.

Louis de Jager, who started the week well, and was in amongst the contenders at the halfway point, could only stay in 123rd, while Paul Dunne and Alexander Levy dropped away from the 117 mark after their below-par performances this week.

For Abraham Ancer and Andres Romero, who did not feature this week, they dropped down thanks to others scoring points in Vilamoura.

The race for the 2020 cards is done and dusted, with the top 117 keeping themselves on the European Tour for another season. Will we have the same excitement next year?
