Scottie Scheffler is at the Mayakoba Golf Classic for the first time this week. That’s not great if you’re the type to lean on guys with course history, but he’s got just about everything else going in his favor.

Scheffler was the 2019 Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year without question. The former University of Texas standout won twice and was twice a runner up. He even took a break mid-season to tee it up at the Byron Nelson where he finished T-35.

Scheffler got off to a strong start as a card-carrying PGA Tour member with a T-7 in the season opener at the Greenbrier. The 23-year-old is 5-for-5 making cuts this season, which includes a T-16 at Sanderson Farms and T-3 in his last start in Bermuda. Scheffler is 29th in the FedEx Cup standings and did it the hard way without entering into any of the free-point/money events in Asia.

Those Asian events did not have ShotLink stats, so take the PGA Tour statistics with a grain a salt. Especially with how early we are into the season. With that said, Scheffler is 13th in strokes gained off the tee (.709) averaging 318.6 yards.

He’s going to be new to most PGA Tour venues this season. The former NCAA All-American and Walker Cup member is no stranger to the big stage, however. It’s why I like him to contend for his first win this fall and bomb his way to victory.
