RSM Classic Power Rankings: Ranking the top ten golfers at Sea Island
The RSM Classic is the final full-field event on the PGA TOUR for 2019. Who will to this week’s power rankings in the hunt for valuable FedEx Cup points at Sea Island?
We trade the waters of Playa del Carmen, Mexico for Sea Island as the PGA Tour returns to the U.S. for the RSM Classic, the final full field PGA TOUR event of 2019.
There are 156 players teeing it up this week at Sea Island Resort in Georgia. The first two rounds are split between the Seaside and Plantation courses, with Seaside hosting the weekend.
Both measure just over 7,000 yards and feature Tifway Bermuda grass overseeded with perenial rye. Seaside is a par 70 and Plantation a par 72.
The biggest defense at these courses is wind. The early forecast looks calm with temperatures lingering in the 50s and 60s. Fairways and greens are relatively easy to hit, and the greens tend to run about average speed.
This is a course that brings short hitters into the fold. Whoever wedges and putts well is likely to get it done, with power off the tee far less important than at most other TOUR stops..
Winning scores have been between 14- and 22-under. Charles Howell III beat Patrick Rodgers in a playoff between the two at 19-under.
The event is in its 10th edition, all at the same location. That makes for a pretty substantial course history sample size to work with.
It’s also worth noting that Sea Island is a hotbed for PGA Tour pros. It doesn’t always guarantee success, but there could be some value plays with some lesser known names playing on home turf.
The RSM Classic traditionally draws weaker overall fields with its place on the schedule. It doesn’t appear to be on the uptick, either. Thirty-two Official World Golf Ranking points were awarded for first in 2016, 30 in 2017 and 24 in 2018.
The stronger field is over on the European Tour where Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm and Justin Rose headline the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
This is the last chance to play fantasy golf for over a month, so we’ll take what we can get.
Let’s check out the 10 golfers with the best chance to win in this week’s power rankings.
