RSM Classic Power Rankings: Ranking the top ten golfers at Sea Island
Chalk this up as something I never thought I’d ask myself in 2019 (or ever): Can Brendon Todd win for the third straight time?
At this rate, anything seems possible. His story’s a great one how he overcame a woeful last few years fighting the swing yips and a rash of missed cuts.
Todd ended 2018 ranked No. 2,006 in the world. He was inside the top 50 in 2014, the same year he won the Byron Nelson.
Now, the former Georgia Bulldog is showing the talent flashed in his amateur and early pro days. He won the Bermuda Championship by four shots.
The PGA Tour took a week off, but that didn’t slow him down.
Todd fired an opening 8-under 63 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic and stayed near the top to win in a Monday finish by one over Carlos Ortiz and Adam Long.
Todd closed in 68-65-68. His winning formula at the tight El Camaleon course can work at Sea Island.
Todd dinked and dunked averaging 271.6 yards off the tee. He hit 62.5% fairways but was not out of position often as he hit 79.17% greens in regulation.
A 1.614 strokes gained putting average was what made the difference on a compressed leaderboard.
Todd has played the RSM Classic five times. He’s made four cuts, including a T-16 in 2013. He finished T-54 with four rounds in the 60s last year.
The 34-year-old’s hot streak came seemingly out of nowhere, so it’s fair to assume he’ll come back to earth eventually.
But we’re dealing with a weak field with few reliable options. This is a player who could make a heroic last-second argument to replace Brooks Koepka on the Presidents Cup team if he were to win yet again.
