Sleeper #3: Mackenzie Hughes

Mackenzie Hughes (2016) +15000

Like Cook, this is the only event that Hughes has won in his career. He won the RSM Classic back in 2016, winning a massive playoff. After 72 holes, he was tied with Blayne Barber, Billy Horschel, Henrik Norlander, and Camilo Villegas.

Hughes was able to outlast all of them, and now holds the honor of the only non-American to win. Yay for Canada!

The win for Hughes was the lowest winning score since it became the RSM Classic, where he shot -17.

It’s going to be a rough go for Hughes this week if the 2020 season is any indicator. Through five events, Hughes only has two rounds in the 60’s, and one made cut. He made the cut at the Houston Open, where he opened with a 68. He faded as the week went on and finished T-55th.

When he won back in 2016, he was coming off less than stellar showings at his prior tournaments as well. He missed the cut at the Mayakoba and finished T-68th at the Shriners. I see something similar happening this go around, as, like Cook, the past success here turns it around for Hughes, and gets him into the top five.
