A player’s results in golf are anything but linear. If they were, Rickie Fowler would be headed toward a third-place finish this week at the Tournament of Champions.

He finished T-6th at Kapalua in 2013 (70-74-67), fifth in 2016 (69-67-69-67) and T-4th in 2018 (69-71-68-70). That’s a combined 40-under in 11 rounds.

I like him to settle right in that range this week, if not win.

Fowler got into this week’s field thanks to his win in February at the Phoenix Open. His production took a dip in the spring and summer while wedding planning, but he still had solid results at the Masters (T-9th), Wells Fargo Championship (T-4th) and Open Championship (T-6th).

A T-11th at the BMW Championship helped him to the Tour Championship, which preceded a 14-week break.

The 31-year-old did fine in his return to action at the Hero World Challenge in early December where he finished ninth (69-69-72-68). He had his ups and downs at the Presidents Cup where he went 1-0-3.

Fowler’s got the game to compete at most any course, Kapalua being no exception. The Californian is no stranger to Bermuda greens. He was 13th on Tour in strokes gained putting (.541).

He’s always been a birdie maker and ranked 30th in that category last season. I like him to have lots of good looks with short clubs. He was first in proximity from 75-100 yards (13’5”).
