Three players have won multiple times at Kapalua. You can probably guess that Dustin Johnson is one of them. How about the other two?

Stuart Appleby three-peated between 2004-2006 and his fellow Aussie Geoff Ogilvy went back-to-back in 2010.

Johnson is vying to match Appleby’s three wins. He prevailed by four in a rain-shortened 2013 event (69-66-68) and by eight in 2018 (69-68-66-65).

DJ’s been to Kapalua quite often. He’s won every calendar year except for 2015 and has made nine Tournament of Champions appearances.

Only once has the former Coastal Carolina Chanticleer finished on the bottom half of the leaderboard (T-16, 2010). He has seven top-10s and finished T-4 (67-74-69-67).in 2019.

These are big factors, but we are taking somewhat of a leap as Johnson’s only competed once since undergoing knee surgery in September. He throttled Haotong Li in Sunday singles at the Presidents Cup and went 2-2 overall, but he was not at his best.

With some more time to rest up, I like DJ to get back to his usual form. He’s in this week’s field courtesy of a win at the WGC-Mexico. In 2019, Johnson also took second at the Masters and PGA Championship and missed just one cut.

Unlike Royal Melbourne, DJ can let it rip at Kapalua. He was fourth on Tour last season in strokes gained driving (.703). Also in his favor is a 23rd rank in par-5 scoring (4.54) and eighth in proximity from 75-100 yards (14’5”).
