Paul Casey had to wait nine long years in between his first two Tournament of Champions appearances. He knew he was headed back to Kapalua by March last year thanks to his repeat win at the Valspar Championship.

The 42-year-old Englishman is at the tail end of his prime, though I like his chances to be back here next year. That’s because 2019 was one of his best: He also won the Porsche European Open in September, recorded 10 worldwide top-10s and missed just four cuts. Casey finished fifth in the FedEx Cup. The only thing he’ll rue is no top-20s at the majors.

Casey finished T-10th (70-69-69-69) at the Tournament of Champions in 2010 and T-16th (73-71-68-71). That’s eight rounds of par or better for a cumulative 24-under. Now, just shoot that over 72 holes and you’re in the mix for the trophy.

Casey’s a talented ball-striker who can use the ground off the tee to pick up a few extra yards this week. He was ninth on Tour in 2018-19 in strokes gained off the tee (.614). His approach game is also elite (8th, .706)

Casey was also 17th in par-5 scoring average.

The putter has historically kept him from winning more over the years, but he’s DFS-friendly in that he rarely throws out a clunker of a week.
