Sentry Tournament of Champions: Top 10 power rankings at Kapalua
Patrick Cantlay capped an impressive 2019 by helping out his country at the Presidents Cup. The 27-year-old American posted a 3-2 record including a 3&2 singles win over Joaquin Niemann.
His strong play at Royal Melbourne comes as no surprise. He won the Memorial to earn entry into the Sentry. It was the former UCLA Bruin’s only win in 2019, though he has plenty of results to be proud of.
Cantlay missed just two cuts and notched eight top-10s in 2019. He was second at the BMW Championship in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and in Las Vegas as well as top 10 in two majors.
He was second on Tour last season in total strokes gained (1.857), only behind a historic season by Rory McIlroy. The West Coast kid is well versed in Bermuda greens and ranked 26th in strokes gained putting (.386).
The fairways are easy to hit at Kapalua. That’s music to Cantlay’s ears as he was fourth in fairway proximity (28’11”).
This is Cantlay’s second Tournament of Champions appearance. He fired four under-par rounds (70-70-72-71), but we all know you’ve got to be in the 60s to hoist the trophy at this event.
Cantlay is a former world No. 1 amateur who’s used to winning often. A hot streak could be coming very soon.
