6. 2002 PGA Championship, 18th Hole, second shot

Tiger labelled this as his personal favourite shot and the most “flush” shot he has ever hit.

On the very difficult Par-4 18th hole at Hazeltine National, Woods pulled his tee shot into the left fairway bunker on a hole that has a slight right to left shape. This meant that Woods would face tree trouble from the bunker and seemed a near-impossible shot from a difficult lie. To make things just that little bit harder, Tiger needed to hit 3-iron from the distance he had left.

Again, this seemed to be no problem for the greatest of all time.

The most surprising aspect was how quickly Tiger managed to loft the 3-iron, taking the aggressive line directly over the left trees and straight at the green. He did this despite a difficult stance on the corner of the bunker and of course with the ball lying in the sand.

Somehow the ball found the green, hole-high and inside of 20-feet from the cup. Tiger would also hole the putt for one of the most remarkable birdies you will ever see and remain within reach of eventual winner, Rich Beem.

This shot could easily be inside the top five of this list, and considering Tiger himself considers it his best shot, probably deserves to be. The only reason it is not higher on my list is because Tiger was six strokes behind the leader at this point, it was not during the final round and he did not end up winning the tournament.

Regardless, I would love to be able to hit a shot like this and definitely count it as one of Tiger’s greatest ever shots.
