Abraham Ancer deserves a look as a dark horse in the FedEx Cup

If you were to list the top players right now on Tour without a win, Abraham Ancer is one of the first names to come to mind. The 28-year-old nearly took down Patrick Reed at the Northern Trust in the FedEx Cup Playoffs last August for his best career result.

That was one of 11 worldwide top-10s since 2018 that helped him earn a spot on the International Team at the Presidents Cup. Ancer can also draw confidence from a win at the 2018 Australian Open.

Ancer is off to a solid start to the 2019-2020 season. He finished T-4 against an elite field at the WGC-HSBC Champions and followed with a T-8 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

The former Oklahoma Sooner’s accuracy off the tee will be rewarded at Waialae. He was 10th on Tour last season in fairways hit (70.21%) and 10th in strokes gained off the tee (.575). His lack of length won’t be a huge detriment, either.

If for some reason the driver doesn’t cooperate, Ancer was 17th in proximity from the rough (41’2″).

Ancer missed the cut in his Sony Open debut in 2018 and improved to T-29 (68-66-68-69) in 2019.
