Sony Open: Top 10 power rankings at Waialae Country Club
Oh so close was Patrick Reed to a win last week at the Tournament of Champions. He outlasted Xander Schauffele in a three-man playoff but squandered good birdie looks that could’ve taken down Justin Thomas.
Nonetheless, Reed’s T-2 comes on the heels of finishing solo third in December at the Hero World Challenge. It was also his fourth top 10 in his last five starts.
Reed gained around 12 strokes on and around the greens at Kapalua. His ball-striking likely has to improve to win at Waialae, but his short game is good enough to keep him in the mix in any week and stave off missed cuts.
The 29-year-old finished 14th on Tour last season in SG around the green (.332) and was 44th in putting (.261). Reed was 27th in proximity from 125-150 yards (21’6″).
This will be Reed’s second Sony Open start. He shot 72-70 to miss the cut in 2013.
He comes into the week buoyed by a 7-under 66 Sunday at Kapalua, while still hungry for his eighth career win.
"“It’s all about winning,” Reed said Sunday. “At the end of the day, I knew what I had to do today. I went out and had to go shoot a low number, especially with how windy it was today, to give myself an opportunity, and I did. Unfortunately I had two putts really to close it, and one of them I got gusted on, and then this last one with the wind and the break, just got me again.”"
