The American Express: Top 10 power rankings in California
You could make the case that no one deserves to win The American Express more than Adam Hadwin.
The 32-year-old has been within arm’s reach of the trophy FOUR straight years. Hadwin finished T-6 in 2016 (66-66-64-72), joined the 59 club in 2017 (71-69-59-70) en route to solo second by a shot, was T-3 in 2018 (66-67-67-68) and was a shot off the pace again in 2019 to finish T-2 (65-66-65-67). He led by three and appeared on his way to win before faltering down the stretch.
His worst result in five trips to the Coachella Valley was a T-48 in 2015 (72-70-66-68).
Let’s summarize: That’s 20 rounds of par or better, 18 of which were in red figures. That’s a scoring average of 67.2 and an average tournament finish of 12th place.
Not bad.
"“Yeah, living in Phoenix these past few years, this is the golf that I play every day,” Hadwin said in 2019. “So that overseeded, the greens are exactly what we play back in Scottsdale. So I would assume that might add to some of the comfort. It’s really hard to pinpoint. For whatever reason as soon as I get down here in the desert I start playing some good golf. So I’ll take it and I’ll probably be here every year.”"
Hadwin is worth a pick this week not only for course history but for recent form. He’s hopeful to continue the momentum from the fall where he took solo second at the Safeway Open and T-4 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
