You know your game’s in decent shape when a T-38 in a full field event at the Sony Open is your worst result in a four-tournament stretch.

Abraham Ancer has cooled off a bit as he’s kept busy this fall and winter, but he’s still on a good trajectory.

The former Oklahoma Sooner finished T-4 at the WGC-HSBC Champions and T-8 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in one of his dual residences in Mexico.

Ancer is near the top of the list of guys due for their first career win. He nearly did it in the FedEx Cup Playoffs when he finished solo second at the Northern Trust.

That was one of four world top-10s in 2019 and 11 since 2018. He won the 2018 Australian Open, so he knows how to get it done late on a Sunday.

The 28-year-old is hoping the third time’s the charm at The American Express. He missed the cut in 2016 and was 76th in 2018 despite a strong start (69-67-71-77).

Ancer is not the bomber type that has the most advantage this week. He’s still an excellent driver (10th in accuracy, 70.21%) and ranked third last season on Tour in proximity from 150-175 yards (23’11”).
