Cameron Champ gave us one of the best stories of 2019. His win at the Safeway Open in honor of his grandfather, who was in hospice care at the time and has since passed away, was awe-inspiring.

It was his second PGA Tour win by the age of 24. He’s still rather inconsistent week to week, but his top-end talent is very impressive.

So is the way he hits the ball. The Texas A&M product has the early lead in the 2019-2020 season in strokes gained tee to green (1.221). He was sixth (.657) last season. That’s a testament to his length. Champ was first in driving distance at 317.9 yards.

Rounding out the rest of his game could make him one of the game’s greats. He was in the negative in every other strokes gained category and struggled on some of the Tour’s tougher layouts.

Fortunately for Champ, The American Express is a birdie fest.

He ranked 22nd in birdie average (4.22) and was 60th in par-5 scoring (4.59).

Champ is in the top 10 in FedEx Cup points not only for his win in Napa but for six top-33 finishes including a T-14 in his last start at the Tournament of Champions.

The Sacramento native is playing in his home state while making his competitive debut in the Coachella Valley.
