The American Express: Top 10 power rankings in California
There seems to be a lot of big names giving this event another chance. Paul Casey is one of them, as he’s making just his fourth appearance and first since 2017.
I like the Englishman to find better fortune in the desert than in the past. He’s gotten the monkey off his back and won two PGA Tour titles since his last appearance at The American Express.
Casey MC’d in 2002 and 2015 and stuck around for all four rounds in 2017 with a T-58 (67-69-71-75).
The 42-year-old is coming in off a week of rest after finishing T-19 at the Tournament of Champions. He didn’t have his best stuff at Kapalua, but Casey did well in the fall and winter with a T-17 at the Zozo Championship, T-18 at the DP World Tour Championship and T-5 at the Australian Open.
Last year was one of the best of Casey’s career. He won the Valspar Championship as well as the Porsche European Open on the European Tour. He also had two runner-up finishes and two third places.
Casey has played well in pro-am formats as he helped his partner to the amateur title at the 2019 Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Casey was second in the pro tournament.
Statistically last season, Casey ranked sixth on Tour in strokes gained tee to green (1.453). He was outside the top 100 in SG putting for the first time since 2015. Get that turned around, and he could be in for another fantastic year.
