Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
Tony Finau made $122,275 without hardly making a sound last week at the American Express. A T-14 was his third straight top-14 finish, yet we’re still wanting more from the uber-talented 30-year-old.
He’s years past due for career PGA Tour win No. 2. The Farmers Insurance Open is a good spot to pick it off.
Finau has a tremendous record at Torrey Pines where he debuted in 2015. He’s finished T-24 (73-68-70-74), T-18 (71-71-71-77), T-4 (73-68-67-71) , T-6 (65-70-73-73) and T-13 (69-69-69-70).
"“Yeah, the South sets up nicely for me with my length,” Finau said in 2018. “I think length is a big advantage on the South specifically, so I’ve been able to put some good rounds together there. You know, it looks pretty good to me. A lot of the holes you can hit a fade and I’m a fader of the ball, I like hitting the fade off the tee. So I think probably a combo of those things off the tee and playing this golf course, I have some momentum.”"
Finau ranked 23rd on Tour last season in strokes gained off the tee (.439). He was also 38th in SG approach (.384). While finding fairways is critical, Finau can still knock it close from the thick stuff. He was 18th in proximity from the rough (41’3″).
Mix in that he was 17th in par-5 scoring (4.53), and you’ve got a recipe for success.
