Surf’s up! I’m not sure that Justin Rose caught too many waves growing up in England, but he’s now equipped to hit the water thanks to the board that was part of his winner’s haul at the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open.

Rose fired rounds of 63-66-69-69 to win by two over Adam Scott and by five over the rest of the field. It was an impressive feat as he played well without his normal caddie, Mark Fulcher, and with new Honma equipment in the bag.

Favorable conditions helped Rose come just one shot away from matching Tiger Woods’ tournament record of 22-under.

"“Yeah, it’s a course I’ve always enjoyed playing. It’s an area that I’ve always enjoyed being at, so for sure I always have good feelings when I get here,” Rose said in 2019. “Probably surprised I haven’t played better here until recently. The South course is one of my favorite layouts that we do play on Tour. The 7th hole is one of my favorite holes in golf, so it’s got some good feelings for me out there.”"

This is Rose’s 11th trip to Torrey Pines. He had just two top-25s and three missed cuts in his first seven appearances. Since then, he finished T-4 in 2017 (65-71-73-70), T-8 in 2018 (69-70-69-74) and won in 2019.

This is Rose’s first appearance of 2020. He skipped the Tournament of Champions despite a guaranteed $60,000+ paycheck. It must be nice to be a top 10 player in the world.

He looked good in his last outing, a T-5 at the Hero World Challenge. That was his eighth top 10 of 2019 against just two missed cuts.

The 39-year-old ranked 21st last season on Tour in strokes gained approach (.525), 17th in SG putting (.504) and 31st in SG tee to green (.739). He’s one of the more well-rounded players in the game and a top 20 is often his basement.
