Tiger Woods looks for another Farmers win to kick off 2020

Tiger Woods won’t need help finding the first tee this week.

Perhaps no other tournament embodies the prolonged greatness of Big Cat’s career than the Farmers Insurance Open. And more specifically, a course like Torrey Pines.

The 44-year-old has won the Farmers seven times and at Torrey eight times when you add in his one-legged 2008 US Open title.

When not winning, he’s likely to be in the top 10: third in 1998, T-2 in 2000, fourth in 2011, T-5 in 2012 and T-10 in 2004. His wins came in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2013.

Last year resulted in a steady T-20 (70-70-71-67). It was his first start of the year, which is the case again here.

Woods showed he can still get up for non-majors as we saw with his win at the Zozo Championship this fall. That strong play continued with a solo fourth at the Hero World Challenge and at the Presidents Cup where he was the only player to win all his matches, going 3-0-0 at Royal Melbourne.

If that form continues, he’ll be a lock to win this week. But chilly temperatures at a long course with high rough isn’t a great formula for a man with a bad back. Doubly so if he doesn’t go full tilt seeing as there are four months until the Masters.

Woods has only missed one cut at this event. I see him playing all four rounds for sure this week and hanging around come Sunday.
