Brooks Koepka: Once again not getting the attention he deserves

2020 is off to a fantastic start for golf. Except, there is one thing missing. That would be Brooks Koepka.

Justin Thomas once again won at Kapalua, Australian stud Cam Smith won the other Hawaii event, and Tiger Woods looked healthy and played well in his 2020 debut, finishing T9 at the Farmers Insurance Open. This past weekend at Torrey Pines also featured an exciting back-nine duel, with Marc Leishman barely holding on for victory (and missing every fairway imaginable) while Jon Rahm made a furious comeback with a birdie barrage. It has been Brooks Koepka less.

Golf is in a fantastic spot with so many worthy competitors. Throw in another high finish from Rory McIlroy, another Bryson DeChambeau controversy, and the potential emergence of a new golf tour and the media and fans have plenty of content.

Four-time major champion Brooks Koepka has once again been forgotten. Outside of his savage takedown of Bryson on Twitter, the four-time major champion has been noticeably absent from the news.

Coming off knee surgery last fall, Koepka finished T34 in Dubai in a fairly nondescript week.

Brooks has begged for the media to pay more attention to him, and while his profile was raised in 2019 with his ESPN body issue appearance he has largely been absent from the news. How are we once again sleeping on Brooks Koepka?

Did we forget that this man is one of only four people in history to finish no worse than 4th in all four majors? Did we forget that he nearly stole the Masters from Tiger last year, finishing T2, and then returned with vengeance with a dominant wire-to-wire victory at the PGA Championship? The man is a machine, and there is no evidence that he is not the best golfer in the world when he’s healthy and dialed in.

Even abroad, the Florida State product is barely noticed; take a quick look at the Saudi International website and there is seemingly no mention of the Koepka. You would think the event would want to highlight the world’s #1 player but, instead, Sergio Garcia receives his own piece.

The ironic part is that despite his continued pleas with the media, the reigning PGA Champion wouldn’t have it any other way. While others continue to attract the spotlight, Koepka continues to privately stew, manically working out and honing his game. There is only one thing on his mind; his tee time April 9th at Augusta.

Brooks told the golf media he felt slighted and, after a small run in the limelight, Koepka is back to being a largely ignored man. Don’t be surprised if he slips on the green jacket this April and makes everyone pay attention to him once again.
