It’s hard to find a player more due for a win than Matt Fitzpatrick. He’s gotten himself into contention multiple times since last claiming a trophy at the 2018 Omega European Masters.

The Englishman’s last close call came a few weeks back in Abu Dhabi where he finished T-2 against a strong field on the European Tour.

He also had four runner-ups, nine top-10s and only two missed cuts. That type of consistency again in 2020 will give himself a chance to make his second European Ryder Cup squad.

This is Fitzpatrick’s first start on American soil since the WGC-FedEx St. Jude where he finished T-4 in July.

It will be the 25-year-old’s third trip to Pebble Beach. He missed the cut at last year’s pro-am but rebounded for a T-12 four months later at the US Open (69-71-72-68).

Fitzpatrick ranked 23rd on Tour last season in total strokes gained (.887). He was also top-50 in SG approach (.409, 33rd), SG around the green (.194, 43rd) and tee to green (.941, 18th).

If he can find a way to calm the nerves on Sunday (178th in final-round scoring average, 71.83), the monkey will be off his back soon enough.
