I’d guess a lot of folks lost cold hard cash betting JT Sunday at Riviera last year. He held a four-shot lead after 54 holes. In search of what would have been his 10th career win at the time, he succumbed to blustery conditions and squandered the lead away to JB Holmes.

Despite the rare crunch time misfires from Thomas, he still managed a solo second finish (66-65-65-75). It was his fifth made cut in as many Genesis Invitational starts. All five netted T-54 or better, including a T-9 in 2018 (69-71-67-70).

He’s the hottest player going back to August. He won the BMW Championship en route to nearly winning the FedEx Cup.

The 26-year-old won early on in the 2019-2020 campaign at the CJ Cup, and then again at the Tournament of Champions. He surged on Sunday for a T-3 in his last start two weeks ago at the Phoenix Open.

There’s no glaring weakness in his game. His best stats this season are ball striking. He’s sixth on Tour in strokes gained approach (1.064) and 17th in SG off the tee (.595).

From 125-175 yards Thomas is top-25 in approach. He’s playing the par-5s at a 4.41 average, good for second-best on Tour.

A missed cut last month at the Sony Open was his first time missing the weekend since the U.S. Open in June.
