You’ve got to feel for Tony Finau. One of the more highly respected guys on Tour has undoubtedly had some of the worst luck in closing out tournaments.

The 30-year-old recorded his seventh career runner up finish in his last start two weeks ago in Phoenix.

When asked after his loss to Webb Simpson in a playoff after both fired 17-under:

"“Yeah, just learn my game’s in a great place early in the season,” Finau said. “I feel good. I had a chance, a great chance to win this week. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen, but my game’s better than it’s ever been. I have more confidence than I’ve ever had. And again, if you know anything about me, I’ll persevere through anything. If you want to say this is a stumbling block or whatever it is, to chase this next one, but I’ll knock it off soon and will be on my way.”"

We’ll see if his perseverance can propel him at Riviera, the site of another close call. Finau finished T-2 in 2018 (66-71-68-69). He finished just two behind champion Bubba Watson.

Along with his solid play in the desert, Finau has finished in the top 14 in his last five starts. That includes a T-6 at the Farmers Insurance Open, which had the strongest field of 2020 on the PGA Tour after this week.

Finau ranks 10th on Tour in strokes gained approach (.926). His putting is far from elite, but at 57th in strokes gained (.327) he’s been better than he gets credit for. It’s why he’s second in overall strokes gained (2.509). Only his nemesis at the Phoenix Open, Webb Simpson (2.848) is better.

The Genesis Invitational has been a haven for big hitters like Finau. If he doesn’t break through for his second win, there’s still a good chance he could help your fantasy lineup win some cash.
