WGC-Mexico: Top 10 power rankings at Chapultepec
What kind of headspace will Rory be in this week? At this point in his career, he shouldn’t be beating himself up too much for missing out at non-majors. Still, the Northern Irishman has to feel like he let a good opportunity slide by last week at the Genesis Invitational.
The 54-hole co-leader struggled on Sunday where a Sunday 73 dropped him to T-5. He fired 68-67-68 to start, where he put on a clinic with his iron play.
Despite the disappointing finish, this was still the sixth straight top-five worldwide finish for the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year. In this 2019-2020 season, he finished T-3 at the Zozo Championship, won the WGC-HSBC Champions and was T-3 at Torrey Pines. McIlroy was also solo fourth against a strong field at the European Tour’s DP World Tour Championship.
While this week is a no-cut event, McIlroy has made six straight cuts in a testament to how consistent he’s been.
He’s got two good results under his belt at the WGC-Mexico. Rory finished T-7 in 2017 (68-65-70-71), skipped in 2018 and was solo second in 2019 (63-70-68-67). He finished five back of Dustin Johnson last year, but was five shots clear of third place.
McIlroy only has seven rounds measured by PGA Tour statistics. He ranks fifth in strokes gained approach (1.136) and fifth around the green (.774). If he can clean up the driver a bit (he hit fewer than half his fairways last week), he’ll be in the mix yet again this week.
