WGC-Mexico: Top 10 power rankings at Chapultepec
Tommy Fleetwood makes his first PGA Tour start of 2020 this week at Chapultepec. It’s his third overall start of the calendar year after posting good finishes at a pair of strong European Tour events.
Fleetwood was T-2 behind countryman Lee Westwood in Abu Dhabi and was T-11 in Dubai.
The Englishman has a knack for playing in the desert as he was also solo second at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai late in 2019.
He was a winner in November at the Nedbank Challenge on the European Tour and picked up a pair of top-25s while playing on the PGA Tour’s Asian swing last fall.
Now, the 29-year-old comes to the WGC-Mexico where he’s finished inside the top 20 all three times.
He began to make a name for himself in 2017 (69-70-66-66) when he finished solo second by one behind Dustin Johnson.
Fleetwood followed up with a T-14 in 2018 (72-71-67-66) and T-19 in 2019 (70-65-72-72).
"“It is a very European layout. It’s sort of — last year it just reminded us of playing in Italy or some of the courses that we play. And it wasn’t just me that played well last year, there was a lot of Europeans up there, like you say,” Fleetwood said prior to the 2018 WGC-Mexico in a transcript from Tee Scripts. “It just does, it just is a bit of a European layout, a bit of an old-school golf course and ones we’re kind of used to playing a little bit. It’s still different, it’s still a long way above sea level and the greens are a bit slope-y than what we’re used to. So there are still differences that we don’t get but just the general feel of when you’re walking down the fairways and seeing the tee shots, it’s tree lined, that is quite a European feel to it.”"
Fleetwood ranked fourth on Tour last season in sand saves (63.54%). He was also 15th in strokes gained around the greens (.329), which will help him avoid the big number that can be lurking at this course.
