Arnold Palmer Invitational: Top 10 power rankings at Bay Hill
Tommy Fleetwood looked destined to join a playoff in pursuit of his first PGA Tour win last week at the Honda Classic. After rolling in a lengthy birdie putt on the tough par-3 17th, all the Englishman needed was a birdie on the par-5 18th.
Fleetwood piped a drive into the fairway before pushing his second shot into the water. It was a disappointing finish that dropped him to solo third in the tournament. The 29-year-old has a wealth of European Tour wins, Ryder Cup success and high finishes in majors.
Winning in the US still eludes him.
"“I’ve just got to keep pushing. Absolutely I want to be a regular winner, but there’s no point in moaning and groaning about it now,” Fleetwood said in a transcript from ASAP Sports. “It didn’t happen. There’s a lot of amazing players on the Tour trying to win, and it’s not given, so I’ve just got to keep going and if I keep getting this close, it’ll happen.”"
Fleetwood had yet another ball-striking week, hitting 71.43% fairways and 66.67% greens in regulation. He just couldn’t get enough going on the greens (.561).
If he can get off the mat, he’s coming to a tournament that sets up well for him. Fleetwood’s finished T-10 (78-66-70-68), T-26 (69-76-69-70) and T-3 (69-66-76-68) over the last three years at Bay Hill.
Fleetwood was the 36-hole leader last year before a Saturday 76. There’s always one round that trips him up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He nearly fought all the way back last year, only to come up three shots short.
Albeit in just eight measured rounds, Fleetwood is eighth on Tour in strokes gained tee to green (1.532). He’s also 18th in sand saves (60%).
Fleetwood has made 29 straight cuts worldwide dating back to the summer of 2018. He’s up to six straight finishes inside the top 18, including a win and two second-places on the European Tour.
