European Tour Power Rankings: Commercial Bank Qatar Masters
By Matt Coles
After winning last week’s Oman Open, Finland’s Sami Valimaki takes his place on the ProGofNow Power Rankings for the first time ahead of this week’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
The tournament was just the sixth event he had featured in on the European Tour, but he came good at the end, winning out in a playoff over South African Brandon Stone, becoming the newest winner on the European Tour.
The Finn made his debut on the Tour at the KLM Open in 2019, before qualifying for the Tour full-time ahead of the 2020 season. He missed the cut at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, before then finishing outside the top 50 at both the Australian PGA Championship and the South African Open hosted by the City of Johannesburg.
His form hit an upturn four weeks back at the ISPS Handa Vic Open, as he secured his first top ten finish on the European Tour, before then taking the victory in Oman last week.
The win saw him make the move inside the top 160, and he now sits at his highest ever placing on the Official World Golf Ranking, at World No.159.
It is improbable, but could lightning strike twice for the Finn, and could Valimaki make it back-to-back wins this week in Qatar?
