Dustin Johnson’s been quiet in 2020. A little too quiet.

While TPC Sawgrass isn’t the ideal set up for a bomber like him, this can still be the site where he begins to heat up.

He finished T-5 at the 2019 Players Championship for his sixth straight made cut (ninth if you discount a withdrawal in 2013) and fourth straight top-30 at this event.

"“This golf course is tough,” Johnson was quoted by the Orlando Sentinel in 2017. “You’ve got to have all facets of your game working if you want to contend.”"

He was the only player in the 2019 field to fire four rounds in the 60s (69-68-69-69) and finished just three shots back of winner Rory McIlroy. DJ hit 76.39% greens in regulation and putted fairly well except for Sunday when he lost more than two shots to the field.

Johnson has made five starts worldwide in 2020. He seeks his first win since March 2019 at the WGC-Mexico. Since then, he has three second-place finishes, including last month at the European Tour’s Saudi International.

The 35-year-old also finished T-10 against a stacked field at the Genesis Invitational. He comes in off two weeks of rest following a T-48 in his title defense in Mexico.

Johnson’s missed just two cuts since the beginning of 2018.

The South Carolinian ranks 27th on Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.496) and is also in the positive in SG approach and SG putting. Johnson leads the Tour in eagle rate (1 per 41.1 holes).

He’s one of the more athletic guys on Tour, and it shows playing from the thick stuff. Johnson ranks 24th in proximity from the rough (39’7”). I’d wait to use DJ for one-and-done fantasy leagues for another week, but otherwise, he’s a solid play for the Players.
