PLAYERS Championship: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Sawgrass
All good things must come to an end. While he saw his countryman (and possible Ryder Cup teammate), Tyrrell Hatton, claim the title last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Tommy Fleetwood suffered his first cut on the PGA Tour since May 2018 at the Wells Fargo Championship.
The Englishman hadn’t missed the weekend worldwide since June/July 2018 at the European Tour’s Open de France.
It’s hard to blame him for this slip-up. It was Fleetwood’s third straight start after a T-18 at the WGC-Mexico and having a chance to win on the 72nd hole at the Honda Classic where he finished solo third.
The Honda beat up the field with gusty winds affecting a course that’s tough even in calm conditions. The same thing happened again last week at Bay Hill.
Another tough test awaits at TPC Sawgrass, but the conditions appear a little more benign.
If the 29-year-old can muster the energy this week, he’s got a chance to pick up his first PGA Tour victory on one of the game’s biggest stages.
Fleetwood is 3-for-3 in cuts made at the Players Championship. He finished T-7 in 2018 (69-71-68-68) and T-5 in 2019 (65-67-70-73). Fleetwood was the 18-hole leader last year and finished just three shots adrift of winner Rory McIlroy.
"“I love the course,” Fleetwood said in 2019 in a transcript from ASAP Sports. “If you like golf, you should like this golf course really. It’s just about as fair as you’re going to get a test. If you hit it well like I did today, you’re going to have chances and you can shoot a score, and people are shooting scores.”"
The long-haired lad ranks 16th on Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.61) and has been solid in all facets of his game save for around the green. Even there, he’s 17th in sand saves (61.11%).
The last time Fleetwood played for the fourth week in a row was in August at the European Masters. He finished T-8 there after jumping the pond from the Tour Championship.
With less of a hike to get to TPC Sawgrass and some time to reflect and reenergize from Bay Hill, give me Fleetwood to get back in contention.
