PLAYERS Championship: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Sawgrass
Justin Thomas has already checked a lot of boxes in his career. PGA Tour champion? Check. FedEx Cup champion? Check. Major champion? Check.
While I can assure you JT isn’t losing much sleep over the lack of a Players Championship win, he’d also tell you it’d be another nice feather in his cap.
Thomas’ results at TPC Sawgrass indicate he’ll win here sooner or later. He’s 5-for-5 making the cut with a T-3 in 2016 (70-68-75-65) and T-11 in 2018 (73-70-68-66).
"“I love this place,” Thomas said in 2016 in a transcript from ASAP Sports. “I had a great chance to win last year and I just, something about this track and just the atmosphere, it’s a really fun tournament and I look forward to playing it every year.”"
He’s already a two-time winner this season at the CJ Cup and Tournament of Champions. Thomas also has a T-3 in Phoenix and T-6 in Mexico. He and Rory appear to be the way-too-early Player of the Year lead candidates.
This is Thomas’ first start of the Florida swing as he comes in off two weeks’ rest. He finished first and third the last two times he had this much time to prepare for an event.
TPC Sawgrass demands excellence with every club, but approach play is even more critical. JT ranks eighth on Tour in strokes gained approach (.932) and is 12th in greens in regulation (71.63%). He’s also third in proximity from 125-150 yards (18’3”) and seventh from 150-175 (24’3”).
His putting stats aren’t great so far (76th SG, .203), but the switch to Bermuda should do the Kentucky native some good.
