Larry Mize is the only player from the city of Augusta, Georgia, to ever win the Masters. That’s one of the things that makes his win in 1987 so special.

Another factor that made Mize’s win was who he beat. Mize, Seve Ballesteros and Greg Norman ended in a tie at 3-under par after 72 holes. Ballesteros won five major championships and Norman won two. Mize won a total of four PGA Tour events.

And, the thing the most people remember is what made Mize’s win memorable. On the second playoff hole, Mize missed the 11th green about 50 yards to the right, while Norman found his second shot on the fringe, about 45 feet from the hole.

It appeared that Norman had a big advantage until Mize chipped in with a sand wedge in one of the most improbable endings in major championship history.
