1979 – Fuzzy Zoeller
Not since 1935, when Gene Sarazen did it, had a first-timer won the Masters. But in 1979, that changed when Indiana native Fuzzy Zoeller won what would the first of his two major championships.
The 27-year-old Zoeller was in 12th place after two rounds, but carded rounds of 69 and 70 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, to tie Ed Sneed and Tom Watson after 72 holes. The three players went to a playoff, and after all four recorded pars on the first playoff hole, Zoeller birdied the second playoff hole to claim the title.
