1948 – Claude Harmon

Claude Harmon is better known today as the father of Butch Harmon, the world-famous golf instructor. But in 1948, Harmon won the green jacket, topping the field at Augusta National by five shots.

It was his first PGA Tour win and one of just two wins in his career. The fact that Harmon won from a field that included Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Gene Sarazen was a huge upset and surprise.

The elder Harmon was perhaps better known as a teaching professional at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamoroneck, New York. And for producing his son Butch, who has coached some of the world’s best golfers.
