No. 2 – Rory Wins Second PGA Championship
McIlroy had already established himself as one of the top players in today’s game by the time the 2014 PGA Championship rolled around. What he did during that week at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, was make himself legendary.
McIlroy shot a 5-under par 67 in the first round on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course, trailing the leaders by one shot after 18 holes.
In the second round, McIlroy shot a 4-under par 68 to grab a one-shot advantage over Jason Day and Jim Furyk after 36 holes. A third-round 67 would leave him one shot ahead of Bernd Wiesberger with 18 holes left to play.
Sunday’s round was a bit of a roller coaster for McIlroy, who suffered a pair of bogeys early in the round to give up the lead. But he rallied late, and his par on the 72nd hole, which happened in almost complete darkness, gave him a one-shot win over Phil Mickelson.
The win also gave McIlroy four major championships in his career at age 25. Only 19 players in the history of the game have won more than four majors in their careers, putting McIlroy in some pretty special company at a young age.
