No. 6 – Rory Wins Second FedEx Cup
The FedEx Cup is the season-long competition on the PGA Tour that culminates with the playoffs and the big check at the end for the winner.
The competition started in 2007 with Tiger Woods taking the first title. After Vijay Singh won in 2008, Woods came back to win in 2009. For the next 10 years, there would be a new winner each year. Players from Jim Furyk (2010) and Bill Haas (2011) to Justin Thomas (2017) and Justin Rose (2018) all won during that span.
Another winner in that 10-year period was Rory McIlroy, who took home the title in 2016. And in 2019, McIlroy joined Woods as the only two-time winners of the event.
McIlroy had won the Players Championship in March and the RBC Canadian Open in June to enter the playoffs as the number one player in the rankings. McIlroy would clinch the title, and the $15 million check for first place, by winning the Tour Championship in August.
Joining Woods as the only two-time winner of the event lifted McIlroy into an even more elite category. While this accomplishment is not equivalent to winning a major, it is a test of season-long solid play, which says something about McIlroy’s consistency on the tour.
