No. 5 – Rory Wins Open Championship

Growing up in Northern Ireland, McIlroy had watched the Open Championship his entire life. Now, he was about to become one of those players who lifted the Claret Jug and became the Champion Golfer of the Year.

It was McIlroy’s week from the very beginning. He shot a 6-under par 66 at Royal Liverpool in the first round to grab the early lead. He matched that score in the second round to move to 12-under par overall, four shots ahead of his partner for this Sunday’s event, Dustin Johnson.

In the third round, McIlroy was steady, shooting a 4-under par 68. He was able to extend his lead to six shots, this time over Rickie Fowler.

On Sunday, Sergio Garcia tried to put pressure on McIlroy early, but the lead was just too big. McIlroy would shoot a 1-under par 71 to win by two shots over Fowler and Garcia.

The win was McIlroy’s third major championship title, allowing him to join even more elite company. By winning three majors by the age of 25, McIlroy joined a club that included only two other players – Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. He also became the third European to win three major championships.
