No. 4 – Rory Wins PGA Championship

In 2012, McIlroy added his second major championship title by blowing away the field at the PGA Championship, which was held at Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

McIlroy actually trailed Carl Pettersson after the first round of play. McIlroy’s 5-under par 67 was one short shy of Pettersson’s lead through 18 holes. In the second round, the wind was the big winner, blowing extremely hard and forcing high scores on the day. McIlroy shot 75, but still found himself tied for fifth place, just two shots behind the leaders, which included Pettersson, Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods.

Weather again wreaked havoc on Saturday, and only about half of the players were able to complete their rounds. When play was stopped, McIlroy had grabbed a share of the lead after going 4-under on his front nine.  When the third round finished on Sunday morning, McIlroy held a three-shot lead over Pettersson.

On Sunday, McIlroy dominated the course and the field on his way to a dominating eight-shot victory. McIlroy’s 6-under par 66 was tied for the best round of the day. And, his eight-shot win set the record for the largest win in PGA Championship history, breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record that was set in 1980.
