12. 2000 WGC-NEC title

When the World Golf Championships were first contested, it was hoped that the best players from the PGA Tour, the European Tour and from other tours would come together and that battles between players who only faced each other a couple of times a year would ensue. There was one major problem with that plan, and his name is Tiger Woods.

A prime example of that came in the 2000 World Golf Championship-NEC event held at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. As the world’s best players got together, Woods was clearly the best player in the field all week long.

Woods opened the event on Thursday by shooting a 6-under par 64 to take a one-shot lead over Jim Furyk. In round two, Woods shot a sizzling 9-under par 61 to blitz the field and take a commanding seven-shot lead over Phil Mickelson.

As Saturday rolled around, it would have made sense for Woods to take it easy and cruise home all weekend long. But that’s not the way Woods thinks. He shot a 3-under par 67 to extend his lead from seven shots to nine, over Mickelson, Phillip Price and Hal Sutton, heading to Sunday.

Again, as most players might have cruised home, Woods had his foot on the accelerator. He shot another 67 on Sunday to win by a whopping 11 shots over Price and Justin Leonard.
