8. 2002 Masters

Prior to the 2002 Masters, there had not been back-to-back winners at the Masters since Nick Faldo won in both 1989 and 1990. Leave it to Woods to end that streak.

Woods did not get off to a fast start, shooting a 2-under par 70 in the first round. That left him three shots behind leader Davis Love III, who shot a 67 on Thursday.

On Friday (and into Saturday), Vijay Singh shot a sparkling 7-under par round of 65 to take the lead at 9-under par. Woods had a 3-under par 69 to sit at 5-under par, four shots behind Singh.

In Saturday’s third round, Woods made his move. He shot the round of the day, a 6-under par 66, to grab a share of the 54-hole lead, along with South Africa’s Retief Goosen. Singh shot even par to remain at 9-under par, two shots behind.

Sunday’s final round featured very difficult scoring conditions. Only one player (Shigeki Maruyama) shot below 70 on the day. Woods toughed out a 1-under par round of 71 and claimed a three-shot win over Goosen.

It was just the third time overall that a Masters champion had defended his title. It was also Woods’ seventh career major championship title.
