Commentator, video game cover star, major champion… what can’t Justin Thomas do?

There are several big names in the field this week that are playing Colonial for the first time or first time in a while. Thomas is in the former category.

He’s making his Charles Schwab Challenge debut while looking to carry on his early lead for PGA Tour Player of the Year. JT won last fall at the CJ Cup and to open 2020 at the Tournament of Champions. A win this week would top both of those limited field events.

Thomas has four other top-10s, including a T-6 at his last start at the WGC-Mexico.

The 27-year-old from Kentucky hasn’t played much pro golf in Texas. His best finish in the Lone Star State was fourth place at the WGC-Match Play in Austin.

Nonetheless, Thomas has the exceptional iron play to stand up to Texas’ notorious winds, which may not be too bad this week.

He ranks fifth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee to green (1.755). He’s been top-five in this category the last three seasons.

Thomas has been a bit wayward off the tee (144th, 58.67%) this season. He’ll be able to recover in most spots at Colonial and capitalize on the par-5s with short irons. He’s third in proximity from 125-150 yards (18’3”) and seventh from 150-175 (24’3”).

Thomas has been making headlines during quarantine as the face of new golf video game, PGA Tour 2K21. He also did a wonderful job as an on-course reporter for The Match 2.

Now, it’s time for him to get back to making headlines for his excellent play on the course.
