Known for his consistency, Webb Simpson’s resume at Colonial has highs and lows.

It’s been feast or famine for Webb Simpson in five trips to the Charles Schwab Challenge. He has a third-place finish in 2016 (68-67-67-68) and fifth in 2017 (68-66-67-71) sandwiched by missed cuts in 2009, 2010 and 2018.

I won’t hold those two MC’s as a youngster too much against him. He was the 54-hole leader in 2017 and only missed the weekend by one shot a couple years ago.

Plus, Simpson has only gotten better since 2018. He’s quietly won twice, picked up five runner-ups and 14 more top-10s. He’s also been a valuable member for the USA in international play.

Simpson was among players who had good momentum halted by the coronavirus. He held off Tony Finau in a playoff to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He was also solo second in the fall at the RSM Classic and had five straight top-10s from the end of 2019 to the beginning of 2020.

The 34-year-old has made 13 straight cuts, making him a DFS fan favorite. Simpson should hit plenty of fairways (40th, 66.07%) and can let his elite iron play shine despite his homemade swing. Simpson is seventh on Tour in strokes gained approach (.968).

While not necessarily known for his aggression, he’s first on Tour in birdie average, making exactly five per round.

This quote to follow was prior to Simpson’s final-round 71 to miss out on a win in 2017, but nonetheless I think he’ll have enough good memories at Colonial to play well this week.

“I like it because I grew up on a golf course that’s short, fairly tight, some doglegs. I grew up going to Pinehurst a lot. Same kind of thing,”  Simpson was quoted by ASAP Sports. “I like it. There are some quirky tee shots where it doesn’t really fit anybody’s eye I don’t think with 10 and 17. 2 you’re going over trees.

“But the more you play here the more comfortable you get the more — you know, I think most guys on tour love this place. You have mixed reviews at most places, but pretty unanimous that guys enjoy coming here.”
