RBC Heritage: Top 10 power rankings at Harbour Town
Last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge appeared to set up well for Webb Simpson. The No. 1 player in the Sagarin rankings is as consistent as they come on the PGA Tour.
The 34-year-old hadn’t missed a cut in 15 months and was already a winner in 2020 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. His lone weakness with the driver could be masked at Colonial. As we guessed, a 13-week hiatus threw a wrench into the flow of the 2019-2020 season.
Webb was one of a handful of big names who were tripped up in Fort Worth.. It was just one week, though, and Simpson should be just fine.
Along with his win at TPC Scottsdale, the Wake Forest grad also placed second at the RSM Classic and third at the Sony Open.
Course history is a feather in his cap at the RBC Heritage. Simpson has made nine straight cuts after missing in his 2009 debut. His best result among six top-15s was finishing second in 2013 to Graeme McDowell in a playoff. Simpson fired four rounds of par or better (68-71-66-71) when the winning score was just 9-under.
Simpson finished T-15th (69-73-65-71) in 2019. He executed a good game plan off the tee by averaging 76.79% fairways hit at 282.6 yards, but struggled from there.
Simpson managed less than 60% greens in regulation and was in the bottom half of the field with the putter.
The Charlotte resident lives just 250 mile north of Hilton Head. He’ll feel a sense of home and get back to his ways of being a top-10 machine.
