Collin Morikawa’s vicious lip-out that kept him from extending a playoff with Daniel Berger took some of the attention away from a similar putt of Xander Schauffele’s.

The 25-year-old had an absolute roller coaster of a back nine Sunday at the Charles Schwab Challenge. The 54-hole leader either maintained his lead or kept within a shot of the lead all day. Schauffelewas in the driver’s seat coming down the closing stretch

He scrambled well to save par on 14 to remain 2-under on the day. He staved off a sure collapse by salvaging bogey with a 31-foot putt. The miracles continued as the X Man holed a 24-footer on the par-3 16th to pull in front.

The three-time PGA Tour winner was making golf look easy. We all know it is certainly not. Schauffele viciously lipped out a 3-footer for par on 17 that all of a sudden meant he needed birdie to get in a playoff.

A 24-foot putt came up short, and so did his chances at the trophy.

Since the Tour Championship in August, Schauffele owns three runner-up finishes, as well as T-3rd on Sunday. He’s picked up five top-25s in a row.

The Californian has beaten some great players en route to victory, but two were against limited fields. Schauffele came from behind on Sunday in all three wins.

The next step is playing well with the lead, and I think he’ll keep getting plenty of reps in that department.
