Travelers Championship: Top 10 power rankings at TPC River Highlands
For a brief second, it looked like Justin Thomas might have had a chance to win last week’s RBC Heritage from the 19th-to-last pairing on Sunday.
His 7-under score in the final round gave him the clubhouse lead for a while before he finished T-8th (72-66-66-63).
“To be honest, if I had putted worth a crap the last three days, I would have been about 30 under,” Thomas was quoted by ASAP Sports. “I was glad to see some putts fall today. I kind of changed a little bit up in the setup. It was just nice to finally see some good shots work.”
Thomas is the early frontrunner for PGA Tour Player of the Year. He’s already twice a winner at the CJ Cup and Tournament of Champions and has six more top-10s. That includes a T-10 at Colonial a couple weeks ago.
The 27-year-old ranks fifth on Tour in strokes gained approach (1.069) and is also fifth in total SG (1.996). He’s tops in birdies per round at 4.81.
Short iron play will be critical for Thomas at the Travelers Championship. He’s 11th in proximity from 125-150 yards (19’3”) and seventh from 150-175 (24’3”).
The time is right for JT to put it all together at TPC River Highlands. The former Alabama Crimson Tide has made four of six cuts here, but has finished better than 30th just once.
In 2016, he fired 68-69-69-62 to nearly come back to win, not unlike last Sunday at the Heritage. He finished T-3rd and just two behind champion Russell Knox.
Thomas said his game is feeling “really, really good” and he’s due to pay it off with a win this week in Connecticut.
